Generator vs Word & Excel
An invoice generator, or a Word or Excel template?
A spreadsheet or a document template can absolutely produce an invoice, and for plenty of people that is the end of the story. This page is about the rest of it: where a browser generator saves you real time, and where the template already sitting on your computer is still the better tool.

How they compare
Invoice generator compared with Word or Excel.
The table walks through making and sending a single invoice. Where a template matches us or comes out ahead, the row says so plainly, so you can weigh it against the way you actually invoice.
| Invoice No. | Word / Excel templates | |
|---|---|---|
| Software you need | A browser, nothing installed | A word processor or spreadsheet |
| Automatic line totals and tax | calculated for you | —Excel needs formulas, Word is manual |
| Formatting effort | Pick a template, it is laid out | You lay it out yourself |
| Invoice numbering | Carries on from the last one | Typed by hand each time |
| Reuse for the next invoice | Saved details and templates | Duplicate and edit the file |
| No account needed | for a local file | |
| Your data stays with you | in your browser | on your device |
| PDF output | one button | save or export as PDF |
| Full control over the layout | —fixed templates | design anything |
Word and Excel stand in here for any office suite. The same points apply to Google Docs and Sheets, Apple Pages and Numbers, or LibreOffice.

The trade-off
When a Word or Excel template is the better choice.
A template you already trust is a perfectly good tool. If any of the points below sound like you, stay where you are.
You already have a layout you like
When you send the occasional invoice and your file already looks the way you want, duplicating it and editing a few cells takes no time. A generator starts to pay off once invoicing becomes a regular job.
You want total control of the design
A word processor or spreadsheet hands you a blank canvas: any font, any section, anything placed anywhere on the page. Our templates are five clean designs, and that is the deal.
You need to work fully offline
A file on your computer opens with no connection whatsoever. Our browser tools need the page to load once before they work, even though everything runs on your device after that.
You build custom calculations
A spreadsheet will run any formula you can dream up, across as many sheets as you like, for tiered rates or multi-project rollups. We handle ordinary invoice maths and leave the custom modelling to the spreadsheet.
Plainly
What Invoice No. does not do.
- It makes invoices, quotes, receipts and a few related documents, not your bookkeeping.
- It does not file your taxes. Tax support is country-specific field labelling for six countries.
- It does not process card or bank payments.
- A document you make in the free tools without logging in lives only in that browser.
Your data never leaves your browser when you use the free tools, the same as editing a file on your own machine. Read the privacy policy.
